It took a while, but eventually Jeremy (the sax and bass and whatever guy) came out. He signed our CDs, said some nice things, and promised to send over “Mr. Guldemond” (the notoriously awesome lead singer).
Shortly thereafter, the notoriously awesome lead singer appeared.
I handed him my CD and a pen… “No Sharpie?” he asked. I shook my head. I am proud to say that the OptiFlow pen from Staples meets official Mother Mother autograph approval. Tell your friends.
He then asked the general questions—Are you from Ottawa? What do you study? Etc. We actually kept up a decent back and forth for a bit. But then, he ran out of questions, and stood there.
We had no idea what to say, and also stood there, forever to be known as the Awkward Mother Mother Fans. That’s when he brought up the weather.
The WEATHER.
Sarah did very well in discussing the likelihood of Ani DiFranco fans rolling around in the mud.
And then we all just stood there… again. Awkwardly.
Eventually, he thanked us one more time for coming to the show, we told him it was a great show again, and he went back to the other lollygaggers waiting for autographs.
Sarah and I were hoping that the other band members would also appear for autographs, so we just kept waiting… and then we waited so long that the notoriously awesome lead singer came back, thanked us again… and we, of course, were all awkward. He, of course, was telling us that he was done talking to us. We knew this, of course… but man… awkward Mother Mother Fans.
So we then left… but, we consoled ourselves that, in somewhat typically chemical rock star ways, he was unlikely to remember this incident at all.
And the strange thing is… the whole awkward situation has opened up a place in both our awkward, awkward hearts for the man.
Rock on, Ryan Guldemond, rock on.

POINTS: Screw that! I have the notoriously awesome lead singer’s signature!
PS- out of this evening, Sarah and I developed a hypothetical band (consisting largely of ourselves)—the Raised-Pinky Beer Drinkers. Tell your friends about that, too… someday we’ll be big.
