Monday Evening Moment of Excellence

Sometimes strangers just do excellent things, with very minimal conversation.

I was working on a group project with some classmates Monday evening in a university lounge when a man appeared.

“Parlez-vous français?” he asked.

A couple of us answered, “Un peu,” to which, of course, he flicked into English.

“Would you like some dessert?” he asked.

We looked at each other, each with the age old proverb of not taking candy from strangers running through our heads. About 2 seconds of thinking later, we all jumped up and followed the guy, who handed us half of one of those big plastic trays of desserts.

Wide-eyed, we asked, “Are you sure?”

“Oh yes,” was the answer. “Our tech guys are doing training. We get a new tray everyday.”

Naturally, we took it. We ate our share (a very large share), then wandered around until we found others to whom to give the rest.

We found some dancers. One of them looked quizzically at us as we approached. When we said, “Free dessert?” he got very excited and said to the rest, “Hold on, everyone! FREE DESSERT.” So we told the story, they took the squares, and all was well in the university kingdom.

POINTS:
Who needs points? There was dessert!

What I learned:
Don’t take candy from strangers, but free dessert makes you popular.
