Sunday... my faux pas

I was walking down the street on Sunday evening. There was a guy in a wheelchair near one of the local shelters. I smiled at him, and he started talking about how no one smiles anymore.

Trying to sound sympathetic, I said, "Yeah, people are lame." NOT the best word choice I've ever made.
"What?" he said.
"Some people are stupid," I said, kicking myself mentally.

Ooops. I don't think he noticed my goof... I need to watch my use of vernacular.

POINTS: I don't deserve any.

WHAT I LEARNED: People do care enough to notice details like that you're not carrying an umbrella whe it's about to rain.
